Sri Lanka's wildlife encyclopedia

Privacy policy

Last updated: 27 October 2026

SriWild is a free wildlife encyclopedia. You can read everything on it without an account and without telling us who you are. This page explains the little information the site does handle, and why.

What you send us

  • Sighting reports (“I saw it”): the species, place, date, your notes, the name you want shown, and — only if you choose to add them — your email address and a photo. Your name, notes and photo may be published with the sighting after we check it. Your email is never published; we use it only to ask about your sighting.
  • Social media mentions: if you tick “SriWild may mention me”, we may add your name, Facebook name or link and Instagram username when SriWild posts about that animal on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram or WhatsApp. Without that tick, only the name you gave may be thanked.
  • Name suggestions: the Sinhala or Tamil name you suggest for an animal. It is reviewed before it appears on the site.
  • Anti-spam: to stop floods of fake reports, the site keeps a scrambled (hashed) form of your internet address for one hour after you send a form. It cannot be turned back into your address and is then deleted.

What is stored in your browser

  • Language: a small cookie (sw_lang) remembers whether you chose Sinhala, Tamil or English, for one year.
  • Offline pages: if you press “Save for offline”, copies of those pages are kept in your browser’s storage so they open without internet. They stay on your device; delete them from your browser settings at any time.
  • “Parks near me” uses your location only inside your browser to sort parks by distance. Your location is not sent to us.

Other services the pages load

Like most websites, SriWild loads some parts from other services, which then see your internet address and browser type: Google Fonts (letters for Sinhala and Tamil), OpenStreetMap and unpkg (the maps), Wikimedia Commons and iNaturalist (some photos), and YouTube — videos load only after you press play, using YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. Share buttons open Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram or X only when you press them.

Advertising

To cover its costs SriWild may show ads from Google AdSense. Google and its partners can use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn personalised ads off in Google Ad Settings, and read how Google uses data at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Who sees your information

Only the SriWild editors. We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone. We may share it only if the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

Sighting reports and name suggestions are kept as long as they are useful to the encyclopedia. Emails attached to sightings are deleted when you ask, or when the sighting is removed.

Your choices

You can ask us to show you, correct or delete anything you sent. Write to admin@dsolk.com.

Changes

If we change this policy, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
