Overview

The island’s only bear, a subspecies of the sloth bear living in the dry-zone forests. It feeds on termites, ants, fruit and honey, and is most easily seen in June–July when the palu trees fruit in Yala and Wilpattu. Bears can be dangerous when surprised at close range.
